CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT

What is a concussion?

A type of mild brain injury following a blow to the head or body where you brain is violently shaken. Symptoms typically last 7-10 days with some lasting longer than 2 weeks depending on the severity.

Common signs and symptoms:

  • Headache
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Balance issues
  • Dizziness
  • Visual issues
  • Fatigue, feeling “foggy”
  • Sensitivity to light or noise
  • Difficulty concentrating and remembering
  • Confusion

How can physical therapy help?

PT can negate Post-Concussive Syndrome where the symptoms of your concussion persist for longer than 10-14 days. Patients who receive early PT return to activity 10.5 days sooner with symptoms lasting 3.5 days less than those who do not receive PT. 95% of patients experience full restoration of brain function following treatment.

What will occur at physical therapy?

Because no two concussions are the same, the PT will examine your movements, balance, vestibular system, memory, other neurological symptoms, and neck involvement. Your PT will create an individualized rehabilitation plan to decrease symptoms, provide concussion educations, and help return you to your prior level of function.
